In lieu of an article, Borderless News and Views is posting this letter from Jen Marlowe, critically acclaimed writer and director, human rights activist and creator of Donkeysaddle Projects. Ms. Marlowe sent us this appeal on behalf of the family of Martina Davis-Correia, activist and sister of the late Troy Davis.
For those who may not recall, Troy Davis was executed by the State of Georgia despite glaring discrepancies in evidence in the case against him; witnesses changed their testimony — and many of his supporters worldwide noted that evidence in the case had too many doubts for Davis to be executed. Davis’ death brought up, as many cases before, questions about the reliability of eyewitness testimony.
Mr. Davis’ sister, Martina, was his long-time champion and advocate. She was the chairwoman of the USA steering committee for Amnesty International’s work to abolish the death penalty. Ms. Davis-Correia, a tireless activist, recently lost her battle with cancer.

As you know, funds are needed for the funeral expenses of Martina Davis-Correia, as well as her remaining medical bills.
The Davis family has had to bury three loved ones in the past seven months. Virginia Davis, the matriarch of the family, passed in April, just two weeks after the US Supreme Court denied Troy’s final appeal, paving the way for the state of Georgia to set a new execution date. According to Martina, her mother died of a broken heart–she couldn’t bear another execution date. Troy was executed on September 21, despite an international outcry over executing a man amid such overwhelming doubt. Martina succumbed to her decade-long battle with cancer on December 1, exactly two months after her brother Troy’s funeral.
The Davis family has had to bear more tragedy and sorrow than any family should ever have to. Together, we can ensure that the financial aspect of these losses will not be a burden to them.
